Have you ever heard of Squidoo? Well if you haven’t, then perhaps it’s time you checked it out. If you want a great way to build content for free, which will get you traffic for free as well, then this is a fantastic place to start!

The website now contains literally thousands of pages called “lenses” on every topic you can possibly imagine. This of course makes it the perfect place to promote almost any product or subject you wish, because there is a rather large following for nearly every topic. It is literally becoming the place for people to go and learn about almost anything! Not only is it easy to create a free page there, many people are creating multiple lenses on different subjects and getting really hooked. And the best part is, there's no limit to the number of lenses you can build!

So how can this help you promote your website or product? Simple, you can create a lens about a topic for which you wish to promote. The layout of the page can be similar to a “blog”, with pictures, images, links to your site, and several modules to break things up. You can even put RSS feed in your lens to people can get your updates! Also, there is an RSS pull feature that you can use to update your Squidoo lens with blogs you create on another blog site such as Blogger.com or even some article directory sites. This makes it much easier to update the content automatically.

There are several “tricks” to using Squidoo to your advantage, and that is for attracting more traffic using keywords. When you create a new lens, you can name it almost anything as long as the name isn’t already taken, of course. Say you have a product or site that is about “home improvement” – you could name your lens something like Squidoo.com/Best-Home-Improvement-Tips.com or similar, which will get massive traffic when people search for that term. It’s almost endless what you can make up for your name, so don’t worry that all the “good ones” are already taken.

Once you create the name, there are several choices to make concerning the type of content you want. In most cases it’s easiest to choose “I want to do my own thing” which gives you the most flexibility. Choose wisely though because once you choose a type of lens you want, you can’t change it! You can add many different types of modules though, including images, text, link lists, Amazon book list, Ebay type list of products, Flickr photos, Twitter Storm, CafePress, a guestbook and place for comments. There are some I’ve missed I’m sure, but go check it out – there are so many options to use! They also have something called SquidU which is a huge learning tool full of tips and ways to improve your lenses, including a discussion group that can help with any questions you may have. You can even use Adsense revenue to make some money directly from traffic you get on your site. How cool is that?

Ok, so if I haven’t sold you on the Squidoo lens site by now, you are either getting plenty of free traffic already or just don’t think it will work for you. Believe, millions of pages are being created on this site and most are promoting their business, so you may as well join the crowd, right? Don’t be the last person in the country to create a lens…not cool!
